Antique maps
Launch of 'Community and Landscape project'
...all contributing to our Tenth Anniversary Fundraising
Once again Poltimore House will be taking part in the Heritage Open Days, with doors open free to all on Saturday and Sunday 11 and 12 September.
Poltimore House again takes part in the City Council's Heritage Open Days, and again this year has a special display - this year a display of antique maps of Devon and Exeter. Star of the show is a very large, fine and detailed coloured map of the city produced by John Roque in 1744. In addition there are maps by Braun, Speed, Blaeu, Saxton, a rare Meissner map of Exeter, Morden, Ogilby strip road maps, Donn, Cary, and Belsey's birdseye view of Exeter.
We also have information on the new project 'Community and Landscape: transforming access to the Poltimore Estate', and this weekend sees its official launch. Poltimore House is working with the Department of Archaeology of the University of Exeter to explore the landscape history of the Poltimore Estate, from its earliest days through to the present. The project has been funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and will include working with communities with interest in Poltimore's heritage, including schools, local interest groups and individuals, and a main aim of the project is to equip people with new skills to investigate the histories of the landscape. Dr Penny Cunningham, Project Officer will be at the Open Days to tell more about the project, and recruit new interest and find volunteers. Do come along to talk to her and others engaged with the project.
